A

A program dedicated to Tomasz Szukalski (1943 - 2012) - the most outstanding Polish tenor saxophonist, a legend of Polish jazz, a charismatic and extremely colorful figure.

His characteristic, very powerful and expressive sound of the saxophone, creating an individual style, sounded on over 100 Polish and European recordings. He has collaborated with such stars as Tomasz Stańko, Edward Vesalla, Terje Rypdal, Palle Daniellson, Dave Holland, Józef Skrzek, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Wojciech Karolak, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski, Czesław Niemen, and Tadeusz Nalepa.
The combination of Slavic melodiousness and warmth as well as rebellious ferocity in the game were a reflection of his extremely colorful personality. His music has been and is an inspiration for many instrumentalists in Poland and around the world.


The last permanent group of Tomasz Szukalski was a quartet composed of: Artur Dutkiewicz, Adam Kowalewski, and Krzysztof Dziedzic. They performed together for over 10 years. In 2008, the Quartet made its last concert tour (12 concerts), starting in Poland and reaching Siberia: from Orenburg, through Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, to Ulan-Ude, under the border with Mongolia.


Artur Dutkiewicz - pianist and composer, a longtime friend of Tomasz Szukalski, for 25 years performed with him in a quartet and in a duet.

"Ambasador jazzu" / Jazz Forum 2012 /, is one of the most frequently performing Polish jazz musicians abroad.

He has performed in over 60 countries around the world, from the USA through Europe, Africa to China, Australia and New Zealand.
He has performed at dozens of music festivals around the world, including: Jazz Jamboree - Warsaw, Munster Jazz Festival, Northsea Jazz Festival - Haga, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Festival Opera De Paris, Duesseldorf Jazz Rally, World Culture Festival - Berlin, Notturni in Palestro Festival - Milan, BJ Ninegates Jazz Festival - Beijing, Kontu Festival - Helsinki, Quimera Festival - Mexico, Utsav Jazz Festival - New Delhi, Melbourne Int. Jazz Festival.


Krzysztof Dziedzic - drummer, one of the most colorful figures of the contemporary jazz scene in our country.

In addition to working with Tomasz Szukalski, he was also a member of Nigel Kennedy's band. with Janusz Muniak, Piotr Wojtasik, Jarek Śmietana, Henryk Miśkiewicz, and Karen Edwards. In 2017, his first authorial album "Tempo" was released.


Adam Kowalewski is a double bass player, composer and lecturer at the Academy of Music. K. Szymanowski in Katowice.

For 7 years he performed in Nigel Kennedy's band giving numerous concerts all over Europe as well as in Japan, China, South Korea and Australia. He has also collaborated with such stars as Bennie Maupin, Eddie Henderson, Gary Bartz, John Abercrombie, Jeff Beck, John Purcell, Kevin Mahogany.


The tenor saxophonist Radek Nowicki joined the band, whom Szukalski distinguished as one of the few saxophonists of the young generation who continued the tradition of the masters. A graduate of the Academy of Music in Katowice, he has performed at many prestigious festivals in Poland and Europe. He is the leader of the Radek Nowicki Quartet.

The concert program includes the repertoire performed by the Tomasz Szukalski Quartet and works by Artur Dutkiewicz dedicated to a friend.
During the concert, photos from various periods of the saxophonist's activity are displayed.
The atmosphere of the concert is unique, you can feel the presence of Master Szukalski.
